The Government of Tanzania has introduced the Labour Institutions (Minimum Wage for Private Sector) Order, 2025 (GN. No. 605A of 2025), which dictates new, updated minimum wage rates for private sector employees across 16 different economic sectors. The order is scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2026. This legislation is comprehensive, applying to all private sector employees and employers in the country. The document specifically defines key sectors such as “agriculture,” which encompasses various activities from crop production and forestry to primary processing and related transportation, and “domestic work,” which is defined as work performed in or for a household under an employment relationship.
The core of the Order is the detailed schedule outlining the new minimum monthly, fortnightly, weekly, and hourly wage rates for each of the classified sectors. These sectors include Agriculture, Health, communications, private security services, energy, private schools, trade and finance, hotel and hospitality sector Mining, Construction, Tourism, Financial Services, Energy, Transport, Domestic Work, and Industrial activities, among others. For instance, the financial services sector is further broken down into categories like banking, micro-credit, and insurance, each with its own specific rates. This structured approach aims to provide clarity and fairness across diverse working environments, ensuring that all private sector workers receive a legislated minimum compensation based on their industry classification starting in the new year. The wages rates are as provided below.
